A native of Passaic, New Jersey, Charles Williamson is dedicated to all musical genres from opera to recital to oratorio to spirituals. Reviewed by Classical Voice of North Carolina as “an audience favorite…with a robust voice,” Charles has portrayed Vasek in The Bartered Bride, andKing Kasper in Amahl and the Night Visitors with UNCG Opera Studio as well as Eisenstein in Der Fledermaus with North Carolina Central University. In 2009 Charles made his recital debut in Passaic, New Jersey and in Greensboro, North Carolina premiered two scenes from Criseyde, by contemporary American composer Alice Shields. During the same year, Charles was also awarded first place in the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs competition.
Charles’ performances in 2010 included roles with UNCG Opera Studio as Counselor in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury and La Rainette in Debussy’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges. Charles completed his Master of Music degree in 2010 with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he studied with Levone Tobin-Scott.
In 2012, Charles portrayed Monsieur Triquet in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin with Opera Slavica NYC and made his New York City recital debut with the concert entitled Gustav Mahler and Company, a program including Mahler’s Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen and works by H. Leslie Adams. Charles was named first round finalist for the Classical Singer Magazine Voice Competition and participated as a young artist with Opera Singers Initiative, a business and entrepreneurship-training program for emerging opera singers. Working with Opera Singers Initiative allowed Charles to perform concerts throughout New York City including venues such as Lincoln Center. Charles is a student of Claudia Friedlander and coaches regularly with Mikhail Hallak.
